The New iPad

Like many people I viewed Apple’s presentation of the new iPad with great interest. I followed live text commentaries from both the Guardian and MacWorld. The Guardian correspondent was furious that we weren’t being told its real name, until the penny dropped that it’s real name is ‘The New iPad’. Seems to me like a name you can only use once. But come to think of it, I do have a folder on my computer labelled ‘New New Papers’ (dating from a decade ago), so maybe the next iPad will be the Nunu (New new).
While being wowed by other people going ‘wow’ at the guitar quartet, and the iPhoto editing, I was a little disappointed that the presentation could have had a little more on the iPad as an educational tool.
Multi-touch devices such as the iPad can serve as personal learning stations (if something as mobile as an iPad can be a station) for all kinds of fields, but particularly where you want to have dynamic data/evidence right next to, or embedded in, explanatory text. In my case, it’s samples of spontaneous speech, and re-recordings of the samples to reveal (aurally) what is going on.
They do promote the iPad as a learning tool here, but maybe it isn’t the biggest selling point …
